Day Four.

Another blog, because I know you just can't get enough. (: Lets start out with the lecture this morning. This little snippit of news is just for you, Mrs. Kronenburg. Listening to the lecture has been made my first priority. I decided that taking notes isn't as important as the lecture, but I am also taking notes of the lecture. The powerpoints are also conveniently posted on the internet after the lecture, if I miss anything or if I need to brush up on anything.

The lecture today was super short, due to the guest speaker who spoke about genomic imprinting. I still have some unanswered questions about the subject so I don't think I'm the right person to tell you about it, but I can tell you that it was very interesting. After the guest speaker, we had our lunch break and then we went straight back into the lab. The lab today was relatively simple but as always, it's not the directions that are hard; it's the concept. I'm glad that the people in my lab group are nice.

After lab, I was so exhausted that I went straight back to the dorm and napped until dinner time. This may be ungrateful of me to say so, but the dorm food is getting a little repetitive. However, I still enjoy the freedom to eat whatever I choose. After eating, I spent the rest of the night mingling and studying hard. The activity of the night was hemp bracelets! It takes skill to be able to make these simple but cool looking bracelets and I enjoyed it.

The classes are so challenging! I find that I am studying every night, trying to get on top of my game, even though it's not required and there is no technical "homework" except for the journal club reading. I think this is a good thing. Being responsible for my own learning and not having anyone to keep me accountable has made me more aware of my time management skills. As you might be able to tell (since I'm still up at this time of night), my time management skills aren't up to par yet. Another three weeks might do the trick.

If nothing else, learning to manage your time before you die will mean that you've been a successful person. I work 15 hours a day 7 days a week and haven't figured it out even remotely. As they say, the harder I work, the farther behind I get.

I can't really imagine that dorm food has changed much over the decades. Although the fare offered is, as you wrote, monotonous, it's still nice to have someone else prepare it for you with minimal cleanup on your part. Being the petite person that you are I know you probably don't worry about them running out of food but when you get my size you worry about that at every meal so it's nice to know that at the dorms there's usually plenty of food.

I recall that when I lived in a dorm at Cal they would serve steak once per quarter and it was always on the same weekend as they invited the parents to visit. I guess they thought the parents were too stupid to talk to their kids and learn that it was pasta and rice for 10 weeks with a piece of mass produced meat thrown in to fool the parents when they visited.

The thing I loved in the dorm cafeteria was the endless supply of milk and fruit juice. For a growing boy I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Then I got to go back to class and realized I was still in Hell. Oh well...

I am glad that you are being challenged. That is why we choose for all of you to be in the class. I also hope that all of you are having fun with the material and that you will have some major knowledge to bring back to us when we have a celebration for the Ivy League Connection.

Thanks for keeping us posted and I understand that all of you are headed to Washington D.C tomorrow. That sounds like a lot of fun!!

And yes, dorm food is boring, but it is better than nothing. However, you will get a chance to get out and taste a little different fare in D.C. Remember to go by the White House.

Take care.

I wish that I had known you were all heading to DC and might be checking out the White House. I have a few messages you might have delivered for me to George W. It seems he may not have liked some of my earlier messages cause he stopped taking my calls.

I tried to remind him that since I pay taxes he works for me, but someone in his staff replied that if I'm still paying taxes that I'm not really a part of his team.

Oh well...
